Blog 3 – Stewpot
When I think of a particular trip that changed me only one comes to mind, the trip to Stewpot. I remember when my husband Edward got laid off of work for six weeks. As it is we were living pay check to pay check. We were falling behind on all the bills. The electric and the water company were threatening to turn them off. I was scared and crying all night. I went looking for help, I started calling different places because we had no food. The night before me and my daughter ate mashed potatoes with bread for dinner. My husband did not eat at all because he wanted us to have enough.
I found this place called Stewpot. This is a non profit agency that helps low income families. If your behind on your bills have received a disconnection notice they will help you and pay half. They help you get your birth certificate and your I.D so that you can get your life on track. There are many counselors and advisers that help you find a job.
I’ll never forget this place for as long as I live. Outside in the front of the building there was a whole bunch of homeless people asleep on the sidewalk. I got there at six in the morning and there was already people waiting in a long line. People were fighting when they opened the doors. The security had to control people. My little girl was getting scared and started asking all different questions. Once we got inside it stunk so bad. It smelled like sweaty, dirty people. I stepped into the restroom and there was a naked girl. She was watering herself with the water in the sink trying to take a bath. The workers there had such an attitude, like they know we all needed something from them so they can treat us bad. Everybody looked so sad and scared. I felt so bad for those people. I wondered hoe they got that far down the hole. I thought ” Don’t these people have any family to help them out? “
I talked to this girl that was asking for help with food like I was. She told me her whole life story. She had been coming there every month for help with her bills, and to get a months supply of food. She had two little girls with her and her husband was sick with cancer. She was getting a knee replacement that month. I felt real bad for her because so was coming there for six months and did not have anything to look forward to.
A week later Edward found a job. It took us four weeks to catch up with all the bills. By the fifth pay check we went to buy a lot of groceries. I stared to realize how lucky we are. This trip has made my life better, I look at things a whole lot different. I appreciate everything we have. I will always try to help people under me because you never know when it is going to be you. Anytime my daughter does not want to go to school I remind her of the homeless and unfortunate circumstances people get into. This experience has made me and my family better people.
